Mini Nubian Dairy Goats
We purchased our first dairy goats, Kaapio Acres Misty Blue and Yellow Rose Farm Miss Goldie, in 2008. Goldie is pictured above front and center, as that is the place she held in our herd. We chose Nigerians based on their small size (easier to manage and house) and for their high butterfat milk. Later the breeding program was expanded to include Mini Nubians. In 2012 the difficult decision was made to sell the Nigerians and raise minis exclusively.
What's so special about Mini Nubians? The Mini Nubian breed began by breeding a Nigerian Dwarf buck to a Nubian doe. The initial breeding produces F1 kids, First Generation. With subsequent breeding, the mini qualities are developed and you will get pendulous ears and Roman nose. This doesn't happen overnight. It takes years of dedicated breeding to produce a high quality mini Nubian.
The blending of these breeds produces a smaller goat with good dairy production. This is very appealing to people who don't want a full-size dairy goat, but want more in the way of dairy production (than a typical Nigerian would produce). The average Mini Nubian produces two-thirds the milk of a Nubian, but eats approximately half the feed. Pretty efficient! We have found that the minis have a higher percentage of butterfat and protein than the average Nubian (as listed on ADGA breed averages). This is due to the Nigerian genetics and it makes for excellent milk quality.
Personality and good looks! Minis are very sociable and love to be around people. Yes, they talk and sometimes complain when they want attention, especially if they know someone is nearby but not visiting them. Minis are friendly and gentle enough for children, too. I love variety, so having goats that come in all colors and patterns is appealing to me. And, who can resist those floppy ears!

Peachynga Goats are negative for CAE, Johne's disease, Brucillosis, and TB. All goats are tested yearly by a Georgia licensed veterinarian for these diseases. The bucks are negative for G6S genetic defect. We raise our goats utilizing herbal and non-drug methods whenever possible, but do vaccinate for CDT.
Feeding and Care: Milking does are fed FRM goat feed on the milkstand. All goats are given free-choice grass hay. It isn't always easy to find good quality hay and the goats will let us know if they don't approve! We currently feed locally grown grass hay and alfalfa mix (alfalfa/grass). The hay we use is free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Our goats are also quite fond of Chaffhaye, a unique probiotic alfalfa hay.
The goats are also offered free-choice loose minerals, Thorvin kelp and baking soda. Everyone is supplemented daily with Fastrack probiotic and weekly with an herbal wormer. The goats are on wooded acreage with a small pasture. We have been very pleased with the health of the goats following this protocol. Worm counts are consistently low and the goats have shiny coats.

It's all about the MILK!!!
Helmstead Minis Clementine is pictured at her second freshening. She is our first, 1st generation Mini Nubian and a wonderful milker. Clementine gave us 1 qt. of milk every morning and then nursed four babies....and they were all well-fed. She continues to be one of our best milkers. She has good capacity and her teats have nice size and placement, a very easy to milk goat.
Goat's milk has nourished people for generations and is considered a health promoting food by many. Properly cared for goats produce delicious, sweet milk. The milk can be used to make cheese, yogurt, soap, or (our favorite) hot chocolate!
******Clementine tested with a high 8.6% butterfat later in her lactation!*******

2013 News
We have reduced the herd size considerably and are concentrating on breeding mini Nubians. It was a difficult decision to sell the Nigerians and many of the minis, but they have gone to wonderful homes are are very much loved.
Last year was the first year for DHIR milk testing and it went very well. Clementine would have gotten her star for butterfat, but we had to skip a month of testing. This will be the year to earn those stars!
We are licensed to sell dairy for pet consumption. The sale of raw milk for human consumption is illegal in Georgia and we wish to comply with state laws.
All milk sold for pet consumption is produced using proper and sanitary milk handling procedures. Immediately after milking, milk is chilled quickly in an ice bath. Once cooled it is packaged in plastic food grade gallon jugs. Milking equipment is cleaned with dairy soap and sanitized with bleach or food grade hydrogen peroxide.
Contact us to purchase raw goat milk and a place will be reserved for you. We currently charge $10 per gallon for raw goat milk.
We often get asked how long fresh, unpasteurized milk will last. It should last at least two weeks if handled properly. Proper handling begins with us and that means milk is brought down to 40 degrees or less within 20 minutes. It is also important to transport your milk home in a cooler. Quality will degrade quickly if it is not kept below 40 degrees. Return your milk to the refrigerator promptly after each use. Optimal storage temperature for milk is 36-38 degrees.

We're now offering our own handcrafted goat milk soap! It will be available for purchase at our farm as well as several local shops. We use pure essential oils, herbs and fragrance oils in our soaps. Prices range from $4-5 per bar. Discounts are offered on multiple bar purchases. If you haven't experienced soap made with goat milk, your skin is in for a treat. It is very moisturizing and even gentle enough to use on your face.
Goat milk contains vitamins and many elements that nourish the skin, including vitamins A, E, C, some of the B vitamins, amino and citric acids, unsaturated fatty acids and zinc. The protein structure of the milk allows for easier absorption by the skin. The pH level of goat milk soap is slightly lower and is closer to the natural pH of our skin. This is important for those with sensitive or delicate skin. Goat milk soap is also safe for babies; fragrance free is recommended for babies.
There are many testimonials regarding the use of goat milk for conditions such as eczema, acne, and dry skin.
